Kingsvale is a fruit growing area and is the first station from Demondrille when heading north towards Cowra. It is the only crossing loop between
Demondrille and Young. Demondrille is on the main south and was the location of extensive railway infrastructure including a coal bunker to service locomotives on the main line.Railway Institutehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14910914203088882661noreply@blogger.comBlogger40125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3266297155212520077.post-58854831282099442952017-04-13T21:08:00.003+10:002017-04-13T21:08:51.380+10:00Motivation and creativityHi all<br />
<br />
Since leaving my job late last year and starting out on several new careers, which together comprise a patchwork part-time week, I have been able to devote much more time to my hobby. It has been an exciting and motivating period! <br />
<br />
If you have not seen my new site, check out www.mechanicalbranchmodels.com.au. I am busy adding to the range and letting my imagination go. So many ideas to explore and models to create! I hope to announce some more new products very soon.<br />
<br />
Kingsvale? Well, that has been progressing, but more slowly. In between those stifling hot days and then weeks of rain and showers, I have been building a French workbench, using silky oak timber from a dead tree we had removed in our backyard. Now that the bench is nearly finished (and it's a monster of a thing - great for clamping and work-holding) i can use it to build the backscenes and pelmets for the Demondrille modules; a slightly revised design to the ones I did so far for Kingsvale.<br />
<br />
More soon.<br />

Here are some photos I took a while back of the corrosion caused by ballast cement.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I thought it may have been due to the flux I use to solder, but because it has only appeared where I used Chuck's ballast cement, I have to blame that. All the other parts of the layout are unaffected.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't know what's in it exactly, but the rail has adopted a very un-protoypical filigree look (nickel-silver oxide must look a lot like copper oxide).</div>

<br />
Having to absorb and dispose of my Mum's possessions after she moved into a nursing home prompted a rationalisation of "stuff". To cut a long story short, this resulted in construction of new, more space-efficient shelving which doubles as a support structure for the layout. I've also built my first backscene structure and pelmet which I will replicate for the other modules. The ply backscene has been given a coat of gesso in preparation for the artistic part. <br />
<br />
The photos show where I'm up to. The new module adjoining Kings Vale will allow me to complete the station and yard. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Height of the track bed is approximately 1.35m which is a good compromise given the limited headroom of the room and the amount of storage underneath I need.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The shelving underneath holds more boxes than the equivalent Ikea shelving I was using. Longer term, I'm planning to replace plastic boxes with ply boxes. Plastic is fast and cheap, but over time the plastic breaks. The taper of the plastic boxes also reduces their efficiency.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9GM6wohrjIwEbuolbzS5oVvn3xur1VRomuTsPl5OqwZdr8o_u17tTiyEbnNqZ3eLvd23S_iqFc9ZL9XKGQlnOFZUKD3kEozFjcTGWY8q3nAsZWj60F6VSbG-hUgECD164SrtZlktAkWw/s1600/long+view.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9GM6wohrjIwEbuolbzS5oVvn3xur1VRomuTsPl5OqwZdr8o_u17tTiyEbnNqZ3eLvd23S_iqFc9ZL9XKGQlnOFZUKD3kEozFjcTGWY8q3nAsZWj60F6VSbG-hUgECD164SrtZlktAkWw/s320/long+view.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The original module has sustained some damage to the track. It's also corroded in some areas. so a bit of remedial work will be required there. I also want to improve the look of the ballast. It's too clean and modern for the era and location.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi99XtCl_XrRn8UymEC7-MYy2hVkmQwIqy5kFlblgL6OfMMXBQGrKX1_riZU9_p2cFI-vurzffBqLnScwTH2zoP2gEEs18K2ORcvsOL7oSABA14-eEP7T9o9EJOI3yPV0Zp-CZnGimiMHo/s1600/Module+front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi99XtCl_XrRn8UymEC7-MYy2hVkmQwIqy5kFlblgL6OfMMXBQGrKX1_riZU9_p2cFI-vurzffBqLnScwTH2zoP2gEEs18K2ORcvsOL7oSABA14-eEP7T9o9EJOI3yPV0Zp-CZnGimiMHo/s320/Module+front.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I haven't attached the baseboard yet. I want to put in some cut-aways etc to improve the contours and put in a little creek towards the left (southern) end of the scene. The face of the pelmet will eventually be painted black with "Kings' Vale" in white lettering.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Until next year ;-)</div>

<span style="text-align: left;">Doing a bit of research through my library, I found a few great photos to help with the weathering of the LFX. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first one shows a BX, but the livery is what I'm trying to reproduce, right down to the faded tuscan, the dust, rust and grease on the underframe and bogies and the wear of the paint on the door frames, particularly the bottome edge. Also of note is how the frosting on the toilet windows has worn off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Not all the window frames appear to be tuscan either. Some are russet.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Dammit, a photo will always highlight the faults. Some of the white acrylic glue is visible along the lower edge of the window panes. This glue was gooey and hard to work with, so I switched to Zap-A-Gap which didn't frost the "glass" the way superglues usually do.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

I'm also experimenting with lighting, aperture and shutter speed. Some additional lighting has been used here to highlight the colours of the underframe.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was keen to complete a model to display at the New England Convention. One that I've been eager to build was one of the two Mike McCormac Models LFX kits I bought some time ago. I saw the effort Mike put into the design of these kits and the accuracy he was aiming for and knew they would be a joy to build.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did get the kit to a stage where I could display it at Armidale, but I didn't finish all of the windows or the weathering. More on that later.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I expected, the kit does go together beautifully - everything fits so nicely. There are some steps that are quite fiddly, but the design is well thought-out and the result is worth the effort. There were a few times where I was crawling around on the floor trying to find a tiny brass part which had been ejected from the tweezers...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Quite a few hours later, the model has been painted in tuscan and russet and lined in buff, using a bow pen.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB9wao5in63VL0YCGM7IUjeiIYHqPhAEby7ndci_mr2ufQ8r8G5Xcx8rBvWEdeUK4kf2oE9giUctFtVHnAWXcW8lORTeuektzPfjjz0pLjklNaLiQfesKjEI2gkUDEbRRfoZ25VsdFVTs/s1600/LFX-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB9wao5in63VL0YCGM7IUjeiIYHqPhAEby7ndci_mr2ufQ8r8G5Xcx8rBvWEdeUK4kf2oE9giUctFtVHnAWXcW8lORTeuektzPfjjz0pLjklNaLiQfesKjEI2gkUDEbRRfoZ25VsdFVTs/s1600/LFX-4.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I was quite satisfied with the paint job - seems that I'm starting to master the air brush at last.<br />
<br />
After this, the decals were applied and a coat of Dullcote applied.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Next came the weathering, and this is where things got interesting. Using my trusty Wild Swan book on painting and lining, I washed the sides in thinned down Humbrol matte black so that the black would settle into the grooved sides and provide depth. <br />
<br />
All was going very nicely. but after finishing the second side I turned the model back over and found that my beautiful paint job had turned white! I think the enamel thinners had reacted with the Dullcote, and resulted in a white, chalky finish.<br />
<br />
I tried a few methods to get the chalk off, including enamel thinners which ate through the paint and removed a decal. A few swear words were uttered. Weathering is normally pretty tolerant to disasters, but this was getting ridiculous! <br />
<br />
I found that scrubbing with a fairly stiff brass brush got rid of most of the chalk, but left enough on to provide a weathered, sun-bleached finish, It looked quite good! Saved!<br />
<br />
This is pretty much the state the model was displayed in at Armidale:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Now the model is almost finished with the addition of the handrails, windows and couplers and completion of the weathering. But I'll save that for Part 2!<br />
<br />
Cheers for now<br />

While the world leaders were in Brisbane for the G20, another great and important event took place in Armidale: the New England Convention. This was my first NE convention, but hopefully not my last. The format allows lots of time to chat with friends and make some new ones; all of whom happen to be very competent modellers!<br />
The people, presentations, models, trade stands and layouts provided much inspiration.<br />
I'm aiming to be more active in both my modelling and in presenting my progress here - so cheers to that!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
...for an update. The good news is that I've finished studying and completed my second degree which has given me a lot more time for modelling. The interest and motivation is still there, but I've been concentrating recently on building some of the many kits I have stashed away. That's for another post, but in the meantime here are a few photos to show where I am with Kings Vale.</div>

There's a deciduous tree behind the station sign, so being autumn at the time I decided I'd place the layout in autumn which would allow a few vibrant colours and some trees which were something other than green. <br />
<br />
This tree shows the green-grey fungus which often grows on the southern face of tree trunks. <br />

I am not completely satisfied with the foliage on this tree, so will come back to it. I found the two Wild Swan books on modelling trees excellent, and a recent visit to London allowed me to acquire all the various materials used in those books for representing branches and foliage.<br />
<br />
This view shows the now installed toilet block and the static grass and other landscaping I have completed.<br />

I have been making steady progress with Kings Vale recently, adding a few fiddly details to the station which really lift the appearance.<br />
<br />
With a few days off over Easter and Anzac Day, the main project has been the construction of a C1 toilet, which was situated at the Cowra end of the platform.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
From the photos I have, this structure is something of a mystery. It is definitely a toilet block of some kind for the gentlemen, but the design is difficult to discern from the photos. It looks like it might have a skillion roof , but without many details I am using a bit of modellers' licence and pretending it's a C1 standard building. I like the style of the C1.<br />

<br />
Since there are few signals protecting Kings Vale yard, I don't think a lamp room separate to the station building would have been justified. The building doesn't look big enough to be a C2. <br />
<br />
So using the Data Sheet for "C" type toilets and lamp rooms, I started crafting this small structure. Well, it's quite small, but not particularly simple - it took about a week from start to finish (of about an hour or two of effort per day). I have really enjoyed doing this bit of styrene scratchbuilding. I love working with Evergreen strip and the results are very pleasing so far.<br />
<br />
Here is the back wall. Most of the louvres are blind, but I wanted the ones adjacent to the doorway to be "real" so that the louvres look right from both sides. Same applies to the framing. Elsewhere, I have not built a frame but just backed the Campbell's corrugated aluminium with styrene sheet.<br />

I had some near disasters with the weathering, thinking I had stuffed up a half-decent paint job. But weathering is pretty forgiving, particularly if you are patient in waiting 24 hours for the paint to dry before trying to fix it. Overall I think the result is ok, and will look even better when it's been added to the platform and surrounded by a few weeds.<br />

The good news is that it seems to fit in the space I have, despite the fact that I have to compromise on the minimum curve radius. If I was running a point to point this wouldn’t be necessary, but to fit the whole thing in, I’d have to create two point-to-point layouts. I don’t think this would work for me operationally, so to accommodate a loop arrangement, I need curve radii down to about 25 inches. This allows me to model the prototype gradients and to have a staging yard on a lower level. <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Overall, I’m stoked with the layout. I am able to reproduce every line, loop and turnout that existed circa 1955. It will be great to operate (I will need help, guys!).<br />
<br />
I only have two concerns:<br />
<br />
• It really will be train room; there won’t be much room for the things currently in there – my modelling bench, paint booth, tool box etc. Is this really a problem? I’ll just have to find clever solutions to work around the layout. Access into the room and to the other spaces (under the house for example) will also need to be modified.<br />
<br />
• I like the look of the railway in the landscape. In this layout, there is a lot of track; it might look too busy and lose the special appeal Demondrille had of an elaborate steam-era facility in the middle of nowhere. This is something I will have to watch out for.<br />
<br />
Why not choose somewhere different then?<br />
<br />
Well, I have a passion for this place; I’m not sure anywhere else (or anywhere simpler to model, anyway; all the other places I like would be even more complicated) would sustain my interest to see it through. I wanted to find out about it and model it in its entirety from the first time I stumbled across the place. Railway modelling love at first sight, perhaps!<br />
<br />
Anyway, it's a hobby; at the end of the day there's no wrong answer if I'm having fun.<br />
<br />
I was there again yesterday; first time in a while that I ventured down to Demondrille south. To my surprise, the vehicular track is in pretty good shape and goes as far as the distant signal beyond Demondrille South. It must have been renewed and used a fair bit during the concrete resleepering and resignalling work. <br />

<br />
In this picture, the road is on what were the transfer sidings, with the down goods dive on the left of frame, with the main lines beyond that. Further on, the “road” goes right along what was the Up Goods line, which seems a bit insulting.<br />
<br />
Here are a couple of other photos where the southern junctions used to be; not much evidence left now.<br />

I’m very lucky that I photographed the remains of the facility while much of it was in place; now there is very little left, and what is left is overgrown and/or inaccessible. Those hundreds of photographs, mostly taken in the early 90s, are really going to come in handy!<br />
<br />
Certainly going to be a fun ride building this one!Railway Institutehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14910914203088882661noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3266297155212520077.post-84034137607969956462013-12-23T09:37:00.003+11:002013-12-23T09:37:27.553+11:00Layout planning with 3rdPlanItWith a few days off over Christmas, I've been learning 3rdPlanIt to lay-out the plan for the train room. Although I haven't mastered it yet, it seems to be easier to use than Templot, which I tried previously, and more capable, being able to represent terrain and even benchwork.<br />
Some time ago, I bought a power hack-saw, but it's been in the box since then. Recently I got around to assembling it and cutting up some aluminium angle for the next modules. I can fit about 6 1.8m long modules in the room in a rectangular shape. Because Demondrille yard was on a grade of 1 in 75, i can make use of the grade to include a fiddle yard under the higher Sydney-end.<br />

I hope that you have a peaceful and happy Christmas and a productive, modelling-filled 2014. I also hope that Santa brings you a few goodies for the layout!<br />
Cheers<br />

<br />
Had a great day today, combining some family time with a visit to the Sydney Model Railway Exhibition. This exhibition really seems to get bigger every year, and it is not possible to see everything thorougly, particularly with two children in tow. So I focused on the important retail stands. I didn't spend too long at any of the exhibits, but the Wallerawang and Binalong layouts looked good, as well as the Lego "outback Australia" layout - very clever and creative and popular with the kids.<br />
<br />
The crowd grew quickly after 10am and many of the usual suspects were spotted. Exhibitions (and most railway enthusiast happenings) do sometimes feel like some sort of live "Embarassing Bodies" event with the higher than average concentration of ageing men in anoraks and desert boots who look and smell like they could do with a good wash. But it did strike me that, for the time I have been in this hobby and the size of the crowd there, how relatively few I know well. <br />
<br />
The rtr models are generally getting better and better. I was persuaded by Oscar Deluca to buy some SDS BCW wagons, which I had previously felt were a bit outside my era. But he was right - they are probably the most accurate and detailed NSW prototype ready to run models we have had to date. Anyway, I want to run a 48 class eventually so a BCW or three won't be out of place.<br />
<br />
With the glut of rtr models, it's hardly worth building kits anymore, but rather than regret this, I now feel that I can concentrate on being the Traffic and Way and Works Branches, rather than spend my modelling time being a rolling stock supplier. For the time poor, this is not such a bad thing. <br />
<br />
I also picked up some SDS Tulloch 10,000 gal tank cars, some Austrain 1915 CVs and a twin pack of Austrains FOs. Even these are very impressive, ready fitted with internal carriage lighting. I had intended to pick up some of the Trainorama MRCs, but the "pinstriped" sides, representing the tongue-and-groove timber cladding, is overdone. A bit disappointing; it's probably otherwise a fine model. <br />
<br />
For a bit of colour, here is a shot from the Wombat Road bridge at Demondrille, taken last week. <br />
Happy modelling! <br />

But I've come out the other side and have started working on Kingsvale again, keen to get it finished so that I can start on my life's work - Demondrille!<br />
<br />
Last week I spent a few days following the Main South to Junee, Wagga Wagga, Culcairn, following the branch to Corowa and down to Seymour to visit the Heritage Centre there. Came back through Albury, Rand, Henty, Cootamundra and home. Found a few trains to chase and the weather was great. Despite the ever-dwindling steam-era infrastructure, I had lots of fun and took lots of photos.<br />
<br />
My next step with Kingsvale is the point rodding. I have started on this, but it's more complicated than first thought. But I have it figured out now and will post some photos soon.<br />
<br />
Looking forward to Liverpool tomorrow, surely the modelling highlight of the year!<br />
Cheers<br />

<br />
As this is the first significant landscaping job I've done on a model railway since I was a kid, I'm surprised about just how forgiving it is. If the colour is wrong, you can go over it, sand it back, repaint it, whatever; but nearly any mistake can be rectified.<br />
<br />
For best effect, landscaping progresses in layers and stages. Using a several excellent references and a number of materials, the photos show where I've got to. No area is finished yet, but you can see that some areas are close.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQCo0Zb_W4dttHEZJGMnVRij-xcqZm0HRINLsp99pNF0xjIiBqXqegaKgYAssu3k79k3HeojuLMQ3qbNiGgHz3ZaoVdY4ANcWyrksbNlJF8sLXTqAjzM3mOVBfBRDcmYW4htDIpV95HD0/s1600/IMG_0354.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" mda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQCo0Zb_W4dttHEZJGMnVRij-xcqZm0HRINLsp99pNF0xjIiBqXqegaKgYAssu3k79k3HeojuLMQ3qbNiGgHz3ZaoVdY4ANcWyrksbNlJF8sLXTqAjzM3mOVBfBRDcmYW4htDIpV95HD0/s320/IMG_0354.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Two significant additions are the static grass applicator, which I made for under $35 following the instructions at <a href="http://csxdixieline.blogspot.com/2010/06/howto-static-grass-applicator.html">http://csxdixieline.blogspot.com/2010/06/howto-static-grass-applicator.html</a> I tried it out today and it worked a treat. This is surprising, because rarely do I find that something I have wired up first-go works. In this photo, the area in the foreground has been landscaped with static grass.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzC4LKo4Pm1gsarRU3hsL-wLYDZm0-AY7b9H-VmQtpRn-7FmKXD7OH3EWAIaqXIad8J4u9I6uFdGwTSIOrRz9RTGxAfNovQp5gvk6qFNSPZZW_dST8R_ek4EszawLSe5yqbCfGSAqW14U/s1600/IMG_0356.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" mda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzC4LKo4Pm1gsarRU3hsL-wLYDZm0-AY7b9H-VmQtpRn-7FmKXD7OH3EWAIaqXIad8J4u9I6uFdGwTSIOrRz9RTGxAfNovQp5gvk6qFNSPZZW_dST8R_ek4EszawLSe5yqbCfGSAqW14U/s320/IMG_0356.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Secondly, I scratchbuilt a rail-rack and gang shed. Again, there are some excellent references available to help the modeller obtain an accurate and authentic result. I recommend Branchline Modeller 1, and in particular Jim Longworth's article <em>"A Desktop History of Gang Sheds in NSW"</em> in ARHS Bulletin, May 1999, pp172ff.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBUo1F2DyCJl9lR6mFLgymMohdtwR8KI9cfi1jfDLmnRBgYOXrgCJfMJjAm8GjkvSfyUhzixSdvFq5gtrJfnhd3jPN436BWS4jPFB7_54jx1RLrWdCTxdvP9PTxL5Jk7IfAFWDF3PabAI/s1600/IMG_0361.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" mda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBUo1F2DyCJl9lR6mFLgymMohdtwR8KI9cfi1jfDLmnRBgYOXrgCJfMJjAm8GjkvSfyUhzixSdvFq5gtrJfnhd3jPN436BWS4jPFB7_54jx1RLrWdCTxdvP9PTxL5Jk7IfAFWDF3PabAI/s320/IMG_0361.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
I purchased a UNEEK rail rack, but was disappointed to find that it seems to be cast from a Code 100 rail master. So it doesn't have that spindly look of the prototype, which would be made from much lighter rail. So I scratchbuilt one from Code 55 rail, again with reference to the article in Branchline Modeller 1. I'm happy with the result so far. It needs a bit of dry brushing to highlight the detail. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Further to my previous post, the gang shed appeared to be painted in medium stone, which James McInerney pointed out was little used after 1954 (Thanks James!). Also, as Tom pointed out to me, (thanks Tom!) the latest Country Branch Lines book, which features the Blayney-Cowra cross-country line shows other gang sheds on the line painted the same colour. So confident that the gang shed was medium stone in 1953, that it what I've painted it. I've started weathering by giving it a couple of thin black washes which has settled nicely into the corrugations and around hinges and latches.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
I've also given the station building a once-over to tone down the pristine medium stone and give it that slightly faded look. The clapboard has been accentuated with a couple of washes of thin matt black humbrol enamel.</div>

After painting with acrylics, the cutting on the northern end of the yard has been generously covered with red dust (from Chucks). I am in the process of adding long grass and weeds using the process described in Barry Norman's Wild Swan book on modelling landscapes. This involves bleaching carpet underlay fibres, glueing them in clumps and combing out the loose fibres before colouring with watercolours. Hopefully, I will have some pictures of that next time.<br />

I've had a few things on the go and with no uni this month, I've made fair progress, particularly with the landscaping at the northern approach to the yard.<br />

Plaster cloth has been layed over the polystyrene form. Plaster has been added over this to strengthen the structure and to (visually) break up the surface. The plaster has been roughly sanded to knock off any sharp edges and shapes in the plaster that make it look like plaster, rather than earthworks.</div>

Some Woodland Scenics washes have been added to the plaster, though I was experimenting here. In hindsight, I think the best use of this technique is for exposed rock. Underneath flock, gravel, soil etc acrylic paint is more effective. The access road to the yard is plain in this view.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After adding flock and various Chuck's Ballast dusts, I was not happy with the colouring. It was far too brown, whereas the dirt road in this area are usually a yellow ochre colour, but quite pale. So I experimented with yellow oxide and plaster which worked quite well. It was a bit too yellow, particularly after spraying it with adhesive, and afterwards the surface was much too textured to look realistic. I knocked this down by sanding with 240 grit paper. This has been quite effective. The underlying dried plaster created some white dust which gives a more realistic colour, as you can see above. One thing I have learnt about landscaping is how forgiving it is. You can't undo much, but you can just keep laying down more layers until it looks right.</div>

There are two areas which I have patched because the ground was un-prototypically uneven. They have not been coloured as yet. Overall, I reckon it's looking ok. It should look much better when I've added some scrub, blackberries and static grass.</div>

On the other side of the line I've layed some cork to show the low point of the terrain, where there is a creek running beneath the yard. Beyond that is a flat area where the Fettlers Shed and rail rack will be. <br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
The real platform is covered in crushed quartz and this will be represented by fine white sand, available from Chuck's Ballast. Under this, I have painted the platform a mixture of Humbrol earth colours to represent the clay usually found under the quartz. It's mainly Sand (matt 63), with some Leather (62), Mid Stone (84) and Middle Stone (225) dappled-in when wet.</div>

There is an opening in the platform face at the signal box, which would have been where the point rods and signal cables exited the frame. Visiting the area recently, I could not see this opening in the platform (would they have bothered filling it in? I wouldn't have thought so), it does seem to be present on the photo at the top of the blog and makes sense that the frame in the box would have controlled the up and down home and starting signals.</div>

<br />
Anyway, things have been slowly progressing at Kings' Vale where I've been forming the landfall. This has been a combination of polystyrene foam, plaster cloth and wall plaster. <br />
<br />
I think it's starting to resemble the prototype and should really look the goods when I've added colour and fluff (static grass and other stuff). I've procured all the bits and pieces to make a static grass applicator, which can be the subject of a future post.<br />

Here's the polystyrene foam forming up the cutting at the northern end of the yard. I realise that Foamular extruded polystyrene is better for this purpose, but I only found out about this stuff after I had started! Something to try next time. The edges are taken off the foam sheet with this Surform gizmo which is very effective at quickly shaping the foam. It also creates heaps of mess.</div>

Opposite the station, there is a loading bank which I've also started to form up using the same techniques. Before I get too carried away, I will need to paint the face of the Sydney Hobbies loading bank and fix it into place. Hope to post some more photos of that soon. </div>

It turns out I posted many of those photos of Kings' Vale already, so I must remember not to post so late at night. Or perhaps it's a sign of early dementia.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Here is a bit more detail on how I went about modelling the platform for Kingsvale.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPoz0e2pa18LhaCiUbXEAMFBolBgwNSyR2coHch21nhdTTNMuGUradyjOva0vOvez7LZUHx_TKb2kP5CdVfHPqKcJRgw1KWL-MtaSyolAtfpFZ-KqIKTpRDuVaIKnaJDcQQY5kSzB8MLw/s1600/IMG_0289.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPoz0e2pa18LhaCiUbXEAMFBolBgwNSyR2coHch21nhdTTNMuGUradyjOva0vOvez7LZUHx_TKb2kP5CdVfHPqKcJRgw1KWL-MtaSyolAtfpFZ-KqIKTpRDuVaIKnaJDcQQY5kSzB8MLw/s320/IMG_0289.jpg" uda="true" width="320" /></a><span style="font-size: x-small;">The platform itself is a piece of 19mm ply. I glued a piece of 3mm balsa on the top which I shaped using sandpaper to represent the slight fall from the station building to the platform edge for drainage.</span></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">The ground also seems to fall away under the station building, and I presume that the building piers are slightly visible from the road side. You can see the gap on the right edge of the photo.</span></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">The brick face is Keiran Ryan's etched brass English Bond, while the strip along the top is from one of the European manufacturers of styrene brick sheet (Kibri, Noch, etc).</span></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">There is a visible edge where the balsa joins the ply, so this was blended out with some polyfilla and sanded smooth. </span></div>

Here is the "grand plan" for my Demondrille-Kingsvale layout:</div>

The modules (the rectangles shown above) would be in my train room; the loop on the left would be in an area under a balcony which I would have to enclose. I have to create openings in the brickwork for the track to exit and re-enter. The loop on the right is in an area under the house - difficult to access for operation, but plenty of room for construction of a simple un-landscaped loop, probably in code 100 for reliability. But my plan is to build it in stages and take my time. So I don't have to worry too much about that yet. The most pleasing thing about this design is that I can run trains continuously as well as preserve the character of both Demondrille North and South, as well as the branch line to Young/Cowra/Blayney, via Kings Vale.</div>

A long time between drinks, but that reflects my general of level of busy-ness as the new year (which isn't so new anymore) got underway.<br />
<br />
But fear not! I have been busy modelling and have achieved a lot.<br />
<br />
1. Painted the station building and signal box. Needs another touch up before weathering.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ41bmQ6U6-8lHRLnD5odtK35oNZzVxfk4DZ0v5vUk_494u7VyoFBynCYGBPUB8GIlPkyjoVgHIomJu2_-olnOBq48aoiUIdCAhJ6VeQGFPS70z-cslspsC4djhhrqeIr7kOTyD5EFXyU/s1600/IMG_0288.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ41bmQ6U6-8lHRLnD5odtK35oNZzVxfk4DZ0v5vUk_494u7VyoFBynCYGBPUB8GIlPkyjoVgHIomJu2_-olnOBq48aoiUIdCAhJ6VeQGFPS70z-cslspsC4djhhrqeIr7kOTyD5EFXyU/s320/IMG_0288.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
2. Almost finished the brick platform facing. This uses Keiran Ryan's etched brass brick sheet. I'm not completely happy with it yet, but it's getting there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIOOnyDoI_mGzVuUAYqxla_7xJz-g0ijYX7nUoEpT8326T6xFEyCuIzqHoYNUBfNkyI-Jdj4IzoZXqIXhcN3CpNuMbZK_eIkyoB-lje5YbpvGmwWoZLsAvmTUgxlmDYW6FshGGjHn9br4/s1600/IMG_0287.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIOOnyDoI_mGzVuUAYqxla_7xJz-g0ijYX7nUoEpT8326T6xFEyCuIzqHoYNUBfNkyI-Jdj4IzoZXqIXhcN3CpNuMbZK_eIkyoB-lje5YbpvGmwWoZLsAvmTUgxlmDYW6FshGGjHn9br4/s320/IMG_0287.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. As you can see from the photo above, I've also painted the rail and glued down the sleepers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4. Contoured the platform and painted a base coat before adding white N scale ballast to represent the crushed quartz surface.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
5. Developed the "grand plan" for my layout. Not sure if I will get this done in the current lifetime, but I think it can fit into the space, so I can work towards it. It's got me excited. I will post a drawing; it's on my other computer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
6. I have fitted some new Ikea shelving in my train room to get better organised. The shelving also forms the basis for supporting the layout. That is, layout on top, storage underneath. This is a great step forward for improving my workspace. The photo still shows disorder and clutter, but you should have seen it before!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKdvuZdYmwMi7BaRJc9BHMu8Dqb9FWXcpjzQ9u4VPme9cCQAn7faBclKy_8gEG2ls5CIVqi1jYfROwC2YDltOvb9Ku9GxT6GF1WxxWB3xbTGx8VIZBqyJ0rTUJNqe_4nf4phUwPMRqTrE/s1600/IMG_0285.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKdvuZdYmwMi7BaRJc9BHMu8Dqb9FWXcpjzQ9u4VPme9cCQAn7faBclKy_8gEG2ls5CIVqi1jYfROwC2YDltOvb9Ku9GxT6GF1WxxWB3xbTGx8VIZBqyJ0rTUJNqe_4nf4phUwPMRqTrE/s320/IMG_0285.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
7. Starting to work on the landscaping - building up the cutting at the north end of the station precinct.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, not layout related, but I have been doing some brass etches for a friend and preparing some magazine articles. So no wonder I haven't updated the blog for a while.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also made some new additions to my "Wild Swan" library - the book on modelling trees is brilliant. I'm really looking forward to giving that a go. Plus a couple of older titles on layout design. If you're looking for these, I ordered them from The Titfield Thunderbolt (www.titfield.co.uk) and they were great.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I hope to post some more details soon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I've been having a great time exploring pioneer lines and discovering structures which have somehow survived the ravages of time in some form. Sampling the Aussie pub cuisine and beer at the end of the day as well. A great combination.<br />
<br />
I made a few new discoveries today:<br />
<br />
<ul><li>I know the Blayney - Demondrille line has been officially closed since 2009, but I noticed there is a stop sign and a sleeper across the branch near Demondrille station, which I hadn't seen before. The scene continues to decay, as does North Box. So glad I took all those photos 15 years ago when there was something left.</li>
<li>The North Jindalee back road, my favourite part of the Main South, which follows the old aligment of the line near Morrison's Hill. This would be a great area for photography if there were a few more trains running in daylight.</li>
<li>The viaducts/approaches to the Murrumbidgee River bridge at Narrandera. Very sad to see all this slowly disintegrating; what a lot of labour must have gone into all those iron-bark trestles. I had never seen this before but it is an impressive and fascinating piece of railway archaeology.</li>
<li>Took some soil samples at Kingsvale and some more photos. If modelling a particular location, I think at least two visits are necessary. The second visit is for all those details you miss the first time!</li>
</ul><br />
<br />
Cheers<br />
James.<br />

<br />
After 10 days off work, I have made some pleasing progress with my small layout. This is despite the 3 kids, a long list of chores etc, and the usual festive engagements. Clearly it's work that prevents me modelling more during the year!<br />
<br />
I've got my track working, two points operating and DCC functioning. I had some more shenanigans with a short, but managed to sort that out.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sleepers in position before the glue dries. The platform facing is glued on. I have glued some thin balsa to the platform surface and shaped it to a prototypical contour.<br />
<br />
I started gluing down some stained sleepers and have started brush-painting the rail. I was all ready to airbrush the rail and the platform face, when - my compressor died! Murphy strikes again. Off to Bunnings half an hour before closing time; a new one was just $79, about $300 less than the lat time I bought a compressor.<br />
<br />
Here's hoping I have more success tomorrow. But at the moment, I am feeling quite optimistic that the end is in sight! Why it has taken me this long to get this far, I don't know...although, I am at the point where I have just about everything I need to undertake any modelling job. Except if a compressor carks it.<br />
<br />
The station building is being painted in the stone colour scheme and looking very handsome so far.<br />
<br />
Some time ago, I promised some pictures of Kingsvale, but never got around to posting them. Here is all that remains (as at March 2010).<br />

<br />
I have really enjoyed being part of this blogging community this year; it has been both motivational and inspirational. Thanks to all of you, the followers and the followed. <br />
<br />
There are a few things on the go, and with three weeks holiday I'm hoping to make some solid progress. Will report, with photos, in next few weeks.<br />
<br />
Best wishes to all for Christmas, and for 2012. I hope Santa has some nice packages for you in the morning.<br />

1. Studying<br />
2. Busy time at work<br />
3. A 20-month old who needs constant supervision (don't want him playing with my brass locos,now,do I?)<br />
4. Writing an article for AJRM (slow, but progressing)<br />
5. Dreaming, particularly being inspired by my old mate Ian Millard and his Liverpool Range layout.<br />
6. Working on some artwork for brass etching<br />
<br />
What's left over is for modelling.<br />
<br />
However, the article I mentioned is about modelling brickwork, an area which is often overlooked here. I have been trying different methods of representing brick walls, with varying success. I will post some photos when I get them off the camera.<br />
<br />
Until then, may all your days be spent in the train room.Railway Institutehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14910914203088882661noreply@blogger.com3
